Computers have been in my blood for more than 35 years and, yet, I continue to learn something new about them every day. In the beginning, my computer was the source of great challenge and frustrating when nothing worked the way I expected or wanted to. Over the years, I have learned how to use the computer to do many enjoyable and wonderful things, such as connecting with friends and family using Skype and email, using the internet for research and continual learning, and listening to radio programs from the 1940s and 50s for free. It has opened up many new possibilities for me personally. I welcome the opportunity to help you discover the many possibilities available to you by effectively using your computer. I enjoy music and photography when I am not on the computer.

In her latest book “Innovate: Lessons from the Underground Railroad,” Bennett explains how the Underground Railroad is among the most effective, disruptive and innovative networks in American history, and compares it to the Internet by establishing how the past and the present virtually collide to create the future in real time. “When you think about the ingenuity that went into creating such an organized network of movement and communication during the time of the Underground Railroad and you compare that same concept to how individuals move and share information through the Internet, the comparisons are too obvious to ignore,” Bennett said. “This book reveals how both platforms serve as avenues for expression of freedom, justice and equality whether networking through portals and links to branding and ownership.” Bennett is a Vanderbilt-educated, Harvard-trained, two-time Emmy award-winning journalist with professional experience in the traditional and social media fields spanning more than 20 years. The idea to form a technology council for the New Orleans area began in the early 1990’s. The founders felt that a strategy to build a technology component for the New Orleans economy was important and necessary in moving the region into the 21st Century. As a result, the Louisiana Technology Council (LTC) originally known as the New Orleans Technology Council (NOTC) was created in early 1994. Several major organizations along with the University of New Orleans and the City of New Orleans were among the founders of the NOTC. The LTC was launched with funds from the City of New Orleans but since its second year of existence, the LTC has not received any outside funds from any other organization. All investments into the LTC are derived from membership, sponsorship of events and the events themselves. In late 2002, Mark S. Lewis, an LTC Board of Directors member, became President and began a new era by focusing on providing members with value for their membership and sponsorship investments. Several new initiatives were implemented including the creation of numerous Special Interest Groups (SIG’s), the implementation of Homeland Security Forums, expanded Tech Tuesday events, eWARDS, a membership directory, and more. Also key to the tremendous growth of the LTC is the desire to form key partnerships with the City of New Orleans, the Louisiana Department of Economic Development, Greater New Orleans Inc., local universities and other tech councils across the state.
